SEAMS Collections Evening: 19th Dec 2013
This was the last club meeting of 2013 and was well attended at the new venue in Faygate village hall.
As is usual for this event, members brought items from their ‘other’ collections to create a lot of interest and discussion. It seems that most of us have the collecting ‘bug’ and run several themes in parallel, usually smaller items which can be displayed inside the house or a small display case. The collections on display this time included a collection of early toy motors and small engines, some interesting engine related ephemera including a rare pamphlet on the Shaw engine made in Crawley and Ruston 2PS engines (no prizes for guessing the owner), and a small group of early brass microscopes.
It was a good social evening catching up with news on acquisitions, discussions on restoration problems and what was going on in the engine world generally. We have a very good group of enthusiasts within the club and club nights are the opportunity to trade news and even the odd engine or two as I’m pretty sure that nowadays, most engines and engine parts change hand ‘word of mouth’….
As is usual with the Xmas raffle, the proceeds go to a charity nominated at the AGM. This year nearly £33 was raised from the raffle which was enhanced from club funds to give £50 to our nominated charity, the Royal Marsden, a very worthy cause. A big thank you to all who attended and all those who donated raffle prizes and food or brought along their collections to make the evening so successful.
