Richard Amos Engine Collection By David Ralph

Following the sad loss of Richard last September, his brother and cousin have sought the help of SEAMS to identify, value and now sell his large engine collection.

In all there were about 70 engines to identify and record. Geoff is keeping over 20 engines which he has shipped home to Canada, and several other engines were left to specific people in Richard’s will. The remaining engines were recently offered to SEAMS members, plus other people who knew Richard.

While Steve Rowland was busy at the Parham rally distributing details of the available engines, David Ralph was doing the same at Breamore. Between us we found eager buyers for 30 engines over that weekend. A few more have since found new owners.

Saturday 25th July was arranged as the main collection day and SEAMS members spent the day there to make this run smoothly.

Special thanks go to Michael and Jackie Brown, Steve Mills and his son Owen, Steve Rowland, Martin Chamney and David Ralph who all got there before 9am to help move engines around.

On the day 20 engines left Richard’s workshop for the last time. It was a sad day to see Richard’s lifetime collection being dispersed, but at the same time everyone seemed to enjoy working together as a team while sharing memories of Richard.

At the time of writing these notes there are just three engines remaining, although these may well have found new homes by the time you read this.

The remaining engines are;

  • Ruston Hornsby 4hp BPR at £650
  • 1920 Petter M 5hp tank cooled at £200
  • 1928 Fuller & Johnson 4.5hp at £600

The Ruston Hornsby and Fuller & Johnson are in original, runable condition.
The Petter M will need rebuilding.

Once all the engines have been dispersed the family is planning to hold an open day for SEAMS members to come and buy tools, spares and other memorabilia from the workshop. When details of this day become available, we will try and let everybody know.
