SEAMS, or more fully,  The Sussex Engine and Associated Machinery Society was founded in 1991 by a group of stationary engine enthusiasts in the West Sussex area of the UK.  Since  many were already members of general vintage and collector clubs in the region like Horsham Hiistorics or the Southern Counties Historic Preservation Trust, SEAMS aims to provide a specialised element that supported not competed with existing clubs. SEAMS was born and we are now coming up to 15 years old and with over 200 members across the south of England. Meetings are held  over the winter at Warnham, near Horsham West Sussex.

We have members of all abilities from highly skilled engineers able to help and support through to novices who perhaps have more enthusiasm than skill. All are fired by an  interest in helping to preserve and display our engineering heritage.

We have been lucky to count amongst our members the Late Charles Hudson and his Wife Carol who as a long term aid to David and Doreen Edgington of ‘Stationary Engine’ magazine fame ‘kick started’ the Stationary engine movement here in the UK. Charles and Carol had a beautiful house down here in Sussex and in the barn, a mouth watering collection of engines was always available for a visit. He had one example of every type Hartop engine produced. Some examples of his engines, his lifetime collection, as shown in this website (see Charles Hudson link). After  Charles’ passing, many of his  engines passed to SEAMS club members and most, now prized possessions, appear regularly at events throughout the South of England. One engine is now being restored to provide period auxiliary power to a local windmill. Most members have their own ongoing restoration projects but sometimes we are asked as a club to take on the restoration and return to running condition of an engine deemed historically important. This was the case with the Cobbs Mill Tangye producer gas engine, click on the following link
